Safari Tipográfico Typography Safari
An exploration of the rich historical and vernacular street lettering and typography of Coimbra. On the first day of February we led a group of keen type lovers out into the wind and rain on a search for unusual, hidden or neglected letterforms around the centre of the city. FBA allowed us to use their studio to run a workshop in the second half of day on producing a collaborative publication of the amassed photographs, rubbings and drawings. Thanks to all participants and João Bicker.

In a city where neon café signs can be found within metres of the ancient stone carvers marks on the walls of Sé Velha, and where hand inked street signs compete with stencils, graffiti and hand made ‘Republica’ signs, there is a seemingly endless array of letterforms to be found.
